The Rega had a lower volume but the sound was quite good even when matched against other more expensive DACs. I did this with my old Rega (non R) at friend’s and the results were interesting. Do you have audiophile friends with different DACs? The nice thing about the Rega DAC is its size which makes it transportable for A:B tests at dealers and friends, etc. Seeing as you live in San Francisco you should have some dealer options? Usually these questions get the “be sure to listen” response which is always valid but not always practical due to geography. I just want to hear an R2R NOS DAC to see if I like it better than what I'm using now. Meanwhile I have it pretty good with my Oppo 205 internal DAC which is not too shabby by any measure. Should be able to make that happen by year's end, and maybe by then I'll have found a better option. I think I am going to save my money up and get a Holo Spring 3 DAC.

Also, as stated by this YouTube reviewer in regard to adding a DDC to the signal chain, unless I have a system that is SOTA some of these improvements are not going to be that audible with my amp and speakers which are still in the range of entry-level gear.īut please recommend a specific model (or several models) of dedicated music server with linear PSU & optimized USB, I think that would be a good investment that I can make if I can get something worthy at or under $1K.

Maybe getting some kind of server/streamer (I'm confused as to how these work and how to implement them). This hobby can lead to seemingly endless expenditures to optimize every factor and element of the audio chain and if I had the money and the patience to go that route I might, but I'm accepting the limitations of my financial circumstances.
